Mango Ginger Paloma

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I created a take on the traditional Mexican Paloma. When I was in Mexico on vacation, I asked the bartender to make me what the locals drink, and he made me a Paloma: a tequila-based drink, typically made with lime juice and grapefruit soda. I love tequila and grapefruit so this drink quickly became one of my favorites – my “signature cocktail” at my wedding was a pomegranate-inspired Paloma, and is what gave me the idea to create my own version.

My wedding was in the fall, so the pomegranate was very fall-inspired. Since Cinco de Mayo is in the Spring, and always makes me feel like summer is around the corner, I chose mango as my flavor, since mango drinks always give me summertime vibes.

If you don’t like mango, you can easily substitute it with orange juice, grapefruit juice or pineapple juice!

What You’ll Need

I tried to keep it as simple as possible, and include many of the traditional flavors, so for this cocktail, you’ll need tequila, lime juice (fresh squeezed or bottled), ginger simple syrup, mango juice and ginger ale. If you like a salted rim, add sugar, salt, and ground ginger.

Getting Started

If you opt for the salted rim, mix equal parts salt and sugar and a pinch of ground ginger in a shallow bowl. Coat the rim of a rocks glass with lime juice, then dip the salt mixture.

From there, add ice to the glass, as well as to a shaker.

Mix the Cocktail

To the cocktail shaker, add your tequila, lime juice, ginger simple syrup and mango juice. Shake it up, then strain into your salted (or un-salted) glass filled with ice. Top with ginger ale.

Enjoy!
